I am curious about the footage of GWTW that wasnt used in the final cut. Is it possible that those unused scenes still exist? I asked (emailed) Robert Osborne about this and he replied that the archives of GWTW at the Univ of Texas may know something ..but wouldnt this be something that MGM/Time Warner would have in a vault somewhere? I ask this because ..wouldnt it be great if those scenes could be found and a long cut version be released or premiered? I know Selznick at one time was considering GWTW as a 2-part movie because over 5 hrs of scenes had been shot. I would luv to see our beloved Vivien in the role of Scarlett again but in scenes never seen by the public. I welcome all comments and expertise by fans.
There are many stills out their of shot film not used in the film, such as the first ending showing Scarlett returning to Tara. Leigh’s hair hangs long to her shoulders. There were more scenes of Belle’s girls giving testimony in defense of Ashley after the raid on Shantytown, and scenes of the O’Hara girls going to the BBQ, and of Belle serving food to the wounded soldiers. Do others know of scenes that were shot but not used? I also believe they filmed Gable’s famous last line several ways (i.e. “Frankly My Dear, I don’t care!”) and OdH says they filmed his tearful scene after Bonnie’s death two ways—dry-eyed and tearful. Gable was afraid to cry on screen but OdH convinced him it would be better with tears and he agreed after seeing the two versions.
Marcella Rabwin was Selznick’s personal assistant during the making of GWTW and she had vivid memories of gathering up long strips of film and taking them to be destroyed. “If only I had known” she would say. I really do not think any actual cut footage exists. It would have come out by now. Personally, I do not think an “expanded” version of GWTW should be done as the film is perfect as is, and I don’t think it is right for later people, never involved in the original production, second guessing what the original director, producer, editor meant to create. Nevertheless it sure would be great to at least see more film of GWTW never used, or to see “flubs” and other outtakes.
Hey, maybe they did film Rhett coming back to Scarlett as a happy ending!
I agree… I don’t think it exists. I remember the ‘rumor’ that new footage had been unearthed. But I believe it was just a rumor or perhaps it was the behind the scenes footage (I have it posted on youtube. See the link below.) that came out in the 90s. I imagine that the greedy studios would immediately restore and release ‘extra scenes’ for profit if they could… so I’m doubtful any exists, Ric.
